Confidence Is Not Something You Either Have or Don’t

As social beings, we naturally seek acceptance from the people around us. Because of that, there are moments when our confidence feels strong, and there are also moments when it quietly fades. However, a fading confidence does not mean it has disappeared. Sometimes, it is simply waiting for the right environment to grow again.

Many people believe that confidence comes entirely from within. While that is partly true, we often overlook the role of our surroundings. A supportive environment can encourage someone to speak up, try something new, and believe in their own abilities. On the other hand, constant criticism, comparison, or fear of being judged can slowly make even the most confident person doubt themselves.

This is why confidence should never be seen as a fixed personality trait. It is something that develops through experiences and interactions with others. A kind word, a patient teacher, supportive friends, or family members who believe in us can make a significant difference. Sometimes, all someone needs is one person who says, “You can do it.”

Unfortunately, many of us stop ourselves before anyone else does. We often say, “I can’t,” before we even try. We worry about making mistakes, embarrassing ourselves, or not being good enough. In reality, most people are too busy focusing on their own lives to judge ours. Even if someone does criticize us, it does not define our worth. It simply becomes another lesson to learn from.

Every achievement begins with the courage to take the first step. Confidence does not mean believing that you will never fail. Instead, it means believing that failure is not the end of your journey. Every mistake teaches us something valuable and helps us grow into a stronger version of ourselves.

Perhaps the biggest obstacle to confidence is not the opinions of others, but the limits we place on ourselves. The moment we stop saying, “I can’t,” and replace it with, “I’ll try,” we open the door to opportunities we never thought possible.

At the end of the day, confidence is not about being fearless or perfect. It is about believing that we are capable of learning, improving, and moving forward despite our doubts. Sometimes, all it takes is one small step to discover that we were more capable than we ever imagined.

As the Thai actor Phuwin Tangsakyuen once said in The Standard knd interview,

“Confidence is key and everything in life. With confidence, you can do anything, and no one will question it at all.”
