NEWSFEED.ID, TANGERANG SELATAN — As a 6th semester student, Pamulang University was assigned to hold Pengabdian Kepada Masyarakat (PKM) activities with the aim of teaching English. On this occasion The student of Pamulang University introduce English to elementary school students especially grade 5 and 6. In this activity, student teach English through a fun and communicative method through drama staging. Therefore, we use the folklore “Mouse Deer and Crocodile” as the material that will be presented, the selection of the story of Mouse Deer and the crocodile was chosen because a story that is familiar to children, but we will make it different because it is presented in English so that they can more easily understand the content of the story even though it is conveyed in English.
Different from traditional teaching methods, in this activity student of Pamulang University do not teach in front of the class using textbooks. However, the student of Pamulang University present a short drama show titled “The Clever Mouse Deer and the Crocodiles”. In the staging of this drama, all dialogues in the drama are conveyed in English with clear pronunciation, expressive intonation, and gestures that help students capture the meaning contextually.
After the show is over, we give some simple questions to the students that aim to find out the extent to which they understand the content of the story, recognize the vocabulary, and capture the moral message contained in it. Student response is very positive. They seem enthusiastic to answer questions, even some of them are able to mention English words used in dramas and explain their meanings. This method also proven to be able to attract students attention and make the learning process more fun. Drama becomes an effective media to train listening skills, enrich vocabulary, and improve their understanding of English in a real context. This activity also trains us as students to become facilitators Creative and communicative learning.
Through this activity, the student of Pamulang University realize that the learning process does not always have to be rigid and formal. With a fun approach, such as drama, students can learn foreign languages without feeling pressured. The student of Pamulang Univeristy hope that similar activities can be developed to support the improvement of the quality of English education at the elementary school level.
